POST-OPERATIVE PHYSIOTHERAPY

Post-surgery Physiotherapy: Guided Recovery Plans for Lasting Results

Surgery is only half the recovery. What you do in the weeks and months afterwards is what determines how strong, mobile and pain-free you end up. Post-surgery rehabilitation is the structured process of guiding you from the day you leave hospital all the way back to your normal life - work, sport, looking after the kids or sleeping properly.

Our team works with patients recovering from a wide range of orthopaedic, joint and spinal procedures - either at our Pimpama clinic or via home visits across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane - and we follow your surgeon’s specific protocols closely so you progress safely. Home-based rehab is particularly valuable in the early weeks after major joint surgery when getting to a clinic is difficult.

Common surgeries we rehabilitate

  • Knee surgery - ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, total knee replacement, knee arthroscopy

  • Shoulder surgery - rotator cuff repair, shoulder reconstruction, shoulder replacement, labral repair

  • Wrist surgery - carpal tunnel release

  • Hip surgery - total hip replacement, hip arthroscopy

  • Spinal surgery - discectomy, laminectomy, spinal fusion

  • Foot and ankle surgery - ankle reconstruction, Achilles repair

  • Fracture rehabilitation after immobilisation

What good post-operative rehab actually looks like
A solid rehab plan is paced. Push too hard early and you risk setting things back; do too little and you end up stiff, weak and slow to return to normal. We use your surgeon’s post-op protocols as the framework, then individualise the plan around your job, your goals, and how your body is responding.

Early sessions usually focus on swelling control, restoring range of motion, and protecting the surgical site. As tissue healing progresses, we layer in strength work, control and movement quality, and eventually return-to-activity training — whether that means lifting at work, getting back on the bike, or stepping onto the netball court.

Communication with your surgical team
If you have post-op protocols from your surgeon, bring them along. If you don’t, we’re happy to liaise directly. We provide written progress reports for surgeons, GPs and insurers as part of the service.

When to start post-surgery physiotherapy
Most surgeons recommend starting physio within 1–2 weeks of your operation -  sometimes even sooner for procedures like total knee replacements. The earlier you start, the better your range of motion and long-term outcome tends to be. If you’re unsure, give us a call and we can advise based on your procedure.
