When everyday tasks start to feel hard, stepping safely out of the shower, cooking a meal, driving to the shops, getting back to a hobby you love, the impact reaches well beyond the task itself. Occupational therapy is the practical work of making daily life manageable again.
The word "occupations" here does not mean your job. It means the ordinary, meaningful things that fill your day, and an occupational therapist (OT) helps you keep doing them.
At Pimpama Physiotherapy our OTs work with adults, older people and NDIS participants who are managing an injury, a long-term condition, a disability or the changes that come with ageing. We can see you in your own home or at our Pimpama clinic. We work across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. Because so much of what matters happens at home and in your community, that is where a lot of our work is best done.

What Occupational Therapy Actually Does
A physiotherapist tends to focus on how your body moves. An OT starts from the task you want to do and works backwards. We look at three things together: what you are physically and cognitively able to do, the specific activity you want to manage and the environment you are doing it in. From there we build a practical plan to close the gap, whether that means a new technique, a piece of equipment, a change to your home or a mix of all three.

The aim is straightforward. We want to help you stay as safe and as independent as your situation allows, and to make the daily things easier rather than something you dread.

What Our Occupational Therapists Help With
Our OT support is hands-on and tailored to your goals. Common areas we work on include:
Home safety and falls prevention
We assess your home to find the trip hazards and tricky spots, then suggest practical ways to reduce the risk of a fall.
Assistive equipment
We help you find and fit the right equipment for your needs, from a simple long-handled reacher through to specialised seating, and we make sure it suits you before you commit to anything.
Home modifications, major and minor
Grab rails, ramps, bathroom changes for wheelchair access, we plan modifications that make your home work for you.
Energy and fatigue management
If you live with a condition like MS, Parkinson's or chronic fatigue, we teach practical pacing strategies so you can get through the day with more left in the tank.
Daily living and cognitive skills
After a neurological event such as a stroke or brain injury, we help retrain the everyday routines that make independent living possible.
What An OT Assessment Involves
Most people start with an assessment, and it is more practical than clinical. Depending on what you need, that can include:

An environmental assessment
Where we physically walk through your home or workspace to see exactly where equipment or modifications would help.

A functional capacity evaluation
A detailed look at your physical and cognitive abilities. This is often used to support a funding application or care plan.

Equipment trials
Where you try a device hands on, in your own setting, so you know it is right before any money changes hands.

Goal setting
Where we map out the specific milestones you want to reach and build the plan around them.
We work closely with your family and your wider care team, including your GP, support coordinator, case manager, physiotherapist and other allied health professionals, so everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Seeing You At Home Or At Our Clinic
For a lot of OT work, your home is the assessment. Coming to you means we see the real stairs, the real bathroom and the real kitchen bench, not a version of them described from memory.
Mobile visits also make care far easier if travel is difficult for you. When more space or equipment helps, you are welcome at our Pimpama clinic instead. The choice is yours, and we are happy to mix the two.

Funding Your Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy can often be accessed through a funding pathway rather than paid for out of pocket. Depending on your circumstances you may be able to use NDIS funding, Support at Home, DVA or other supports.
We are a registered NDIS provider for self-managed participants and we can carry out the OT assessments often needed for assistive technology and home modification funding requests.
Eligibility always depends on your individual situation and plan, so the simplest next step is to talk to us about your options. There is no obligation, and we would rather you understood the path before you start.

When to Bring in An OT
It is worth getting an OT involved early, ideally before a problem becomes an accident. Good moments to reach out include:
-
Coming home from hospital after surgery
-
Adjusting to a new diagnosis
-
Moving into a new home
-
Noticing that daily tasks are getting harder
-
Applying for NDIS housing and assistive technology funding.

Setting your environment up well in advance is almost always easier than reacting after a fall.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy helps you keep doing the everyday activities that matter to you when injury, illness, disability or ageing get in the way. An OT looks at your abilities, the task and your environment, then finds practical ways to make daily life safer and easier.
What is the difference between an OT and a physiotherapist?
A physiotherapist focuses largely on movement, strength and function in the body. An OT starts from the activity you want to do, such as showering, cooking or driving, and works out how to make that activity possible, often through technique, equipment or changes to your surroundings. Many people benefit from both, and at Pimpama Physiotherapy you can see both under one roof.
Do I need a referral to see an occupational therapist?
Not always. You can book privately without a referral. A referral may be needed for certain funded pathways, so it is worth checking with us about your specific situation.
Does the NDIS cover occupational therapy?
For eligible participants, OT assessments and supports can often be funded through the NDIS. What is covered depends on your goals and your plan, so contact us to talk through your circumstances.
Do you do home visits?
Yes. We offer mobile occupational therapy across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane, and you can also be seen at our Pimpama clinic.
This information is general and is not a substitute for an individual assessment. Please book an appointment for advice tailored to you.
