CONCUSSION MANAGEMENT
Concussion Rehabilitation: Safe Pathways Back to Sport, Work, and Life
A concussion is considered a traumatic brain injury that changes how your brain functions. Whether it happened on the local footy field, during a car accident, or from an accidental slip at home, the symptoms can be incredibly disorienting. At Pimpama Physiotherapy, we know that the old advice of "sitting in a dark room until it goes away" is outdated. Modern evidence shows that targeted, active rehabilitation is the safest and fastest way to recover.

Our team provides structured, evidence-based concussion management. We work closely with you to safely guide you through your recovery - helping you clear the brain fog, manage your physical symptoms, and get you back to school, work, or sport safely.

Symptoms and challenges we help with
Concussion symptoms can evolve over days to weeks. We provide targeted therapy for:
-
Vestibular & Balance Issues: Persistent dizziness, unsteadiness, or feeling "off-balance".
-
Oculomotor (Vision) Disturbances: Difficulty tracking objects, blurred vision, or eye strain when looking at screens.
-
Cervicogenic Symptoms: Neck pain, stiffness, and tension headaches originating from the whiplash component of the injury.
-
Exertion Intolerance: Increased symptoms (headaches, fatigue) when your heart rate rises during physical activity.
-
Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS): Managing symptoms that have lingered for weeks or months past the initial injury.

How our concussion rehabilitation works
Every brain is unique, which is why every concussion recovery plan starts with a comprehensive physical and neurological assessment. Once we identify which systems are driving your symptoms, your treatment may include:
-
Oculomotor Exercises: Targeted eye, head, and balance exercises to recalibrate your brain and inner ear connection, eliminating dizziness.
-
Cervical Spine Therapy: Gentle hands-on manual therapy, soft tissue release, and neck strengthening to treat concurrent whiplash and neck headaches.
-
Sub-Symptom Exertion Training: Guided, gradual cardiovascular programming using your heart rate to safely improve your physical tolerance without triggering a flare-up.
-
Structured Return-to-Play/Work Protocols: Step-by-step, evidence-backed milestone tracking so you can return to contact sports or high-cognition work environments with absolute confidence.

When to start concussion physiotherapy
While immediate medical clearance from a GP or emergency department is always the essential first step, your physical rehabilitation can begin quite early. Research indicates that commencing gentle, sub-symptom therapy within 7 to 10 days of the injury can significantly reduce the risk of developing long-term post-concussion symptoms. If your symptoms have already been lingering for months, it is never too late to start - rehabilitation is highly effective at any stage.
