Physiotherapy for Stroke Rehabilitation & Recovery,
in Pimpama or at Home

A stroke can change life in moments, for the person who has it and for the people who love them. Recovery takes time, but it is real. The brain can adapt and rewire itself, and good rehabilitation helps drive that change.

Stroke is common. Around one in four people will have a stroke in their lifetime, and close to half a million Australians are living in the community after one. Many keep recovering for months and years, well past the early weeks.

At Pimpama Physiotherapy, stroke rehabilitation is core to what we do. We provide stroke physiotherapy at our Pimpama clinic and through home visits across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. We work with survivors at every stage, from just out of hospital to years down the track.

What Is A Stroke?

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. There are two main types. An ischaemic stroke is caused by a blockage. A haemorrhagic stroke is caused by a bleed.

Brain cells start to die within minutes, so a stroke is always a medical emergency. Stroke signs come on suddenly. Common ones are a drooping face, weakness in one arm and slurred speech. If you see them, think FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) and call 000.

Common Effects of Stroke

No two strokes are the same. The effects depend on which part of the brain was affected and how much. Physiotherapy focuses on the physical effects. These often include:

Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body (hemiparesis).

Problems with walking, balance and coordination.

Difficulty using the arm or hand.

Spasticity, where muscles become tight and stiff.

Fatigue, which is common and often underestimated.

A stroke can also affect speech, swallowing, memory and mood. These are supported by other team members, such as speech pathologists, occupational therapists and psychologists, working alongside your physiotherapist.

How Physiotherapy Helps Stroke Recovery

The brain can form new pathways and relearn skills. This is called neuroplasticity. Rehabilitation is one of the main ways to drive it.

The key is the right practice, repeated often. Physiotherapists call this task-specific training. You practise the movements that matter, over and over, so they come back. Studies show that more practice usually leads to better recovery.

Australian stroke experts have also pointed out that community rehabilitation is often under-provided once people leave hospital. That gap is exactly where we focus.

What Stroke Physiotherapy Can Focus On

After assessing you, we build a program around your goals. It may include:

  • Walking and gait retraining, including treadmill and overground practice.

  • Standing balance and falls prevention.

  • Arm and hand recovery, including constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT).

  • Sit-to-stand strength and transfers.

  • Functional electrical stimulation (FES) for weak muscles.

  • Spasticity management, including orthoses and bracing such as the Turtle brace.

  • Cardiovascular fitness and community walking.

  • Outdoor mobility and confidence with falls.

  • Advice on equipment and home modifications.

The Stages Of Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke recovery is a journey, not a single event. It usually moves through a few stages:

  • Early recovery, in the first weeks: this often starts in hospital, focused on safety, basic movement and early function.

  • Active rehabilitation, the first 6 to 12 months: this is usually the most intensive phase, where a lot of progress happens.

  • Long-term recovery, beyond 12 months: progress can continue for years, especially with regular, goal-focused rehab.

There is no fixed finish line. Many of our clients keep making gains long after they were told their recovery had plateaued.

Stroke Rehabilitation In Pimpama: In Clinic Or At Home

We provide stroke rehabilitation across the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. You can see us at our Pimpama clinic, at home or a mix of both.

In the clinic, we have the space and equipment to push your rehab, including parallel bars, a treadmill, gym equipment and a Bobath bed. At home, we work on the real tasks that matter most, like getting out of your own bed, moving around your kitchen or walking your own driveway. Many clients alternate between the two, and we adjust the mix as you progress.

We also support the people around you. Family and carers are welcome in sessions, and we show you how to help safely at home.

Funding For Stroke Rehabilitation

Stroke rehab is often long-term, so funding matters. Depending on your age and situation, your physiotherapy may be covered through:

  • NDIS: for eligible people under 65 living with a permanent disability after a stroke (see NDIS).

  • NIISQ: if your stroke was related to a motor vehicle accident, through the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland.

  • Support at Home: for many older adults (see Support at Home).

  • WorkCover or DVA: in some circumstances (see WorkCover and DVA).

  • Private health funds with extras cover for physiotherapy.

If you are a participant of the National Injury Insurance Scheme Queensland (NIISQ), you may be eligible for rehabilitation services under the scheme. Contact us to discuss your situation. Eligibility for any funding pathway depends on your individual circumstances and plan.
